Christian Marclay

Christian Marclay

Christian Marclay is famous for his musical art with turntables and records.  He physically breaks records apart and then combines them together to create new sounds and music.  Christian Marclay is also famous for his film The Clock.  The Clock is an extraordinary piece of work that is composed of scenes of movies.  Each scene contains an image of a clock, watch, or some other timekeeping device.   This film is 24 hours long, and runs on a loop.  When it is exhibited, people are invited to come and go as they please, and it does not matter at which point in the film they arrive.  The whole idea behind the film is that whatever time is displayed on the clocks in the movie, that is the exact time that it is in real life.

I learned about Christian Marclay in Video Art last semester, and I really enjoyed learning about his Clock film.  I think it is imaginative to have a film that is so interactive.  The entire time while watching The Clock, people are constantly aware and reminded of what time it is.  People’s lives are so dictated by what time it is, that it is inspiring to have a piece of art that reminds people of that fact repeatedly.  I admire the amount of time it took to find all of the clips with the correct time on it, and then piece them together into a 24-hour-long film.  Christian Marclay is fascinating to me because he uses such abstract concepts such as nose and time and creates successful artwork out of them.
